How Much Money Did Yes Day Make

How Much Money Did Yes Day Make – On “Yes Day,” two parents decide to say yes to every request their child makes in exchange for good behavior during the month.

It’s been a tough year amid a pandemic, political upheaval, recession and a national mental health crisis – so I thought I’d lighten up a bit this month and watch Netflix’s latest comedy release, Yes Day.

The premise sounds promising—like The Purge, but for kids. For just one day, two parents decide to say yes (with some ground rules, of course) to every request their children make in exchange for good behavior for the month.

Have A Winter

In my opinion, the best family movies are magical for kids but profound for parents. Pixar has always been very good at this – Mrs. Unbelievable worried about her husband’s potential cheating and looked at his naughty back in the mirror. A paternity test and a controversial last will and testament form the heart of the Ratatouille plot. I found both movies entertaining as a kid and watched them over and over again, but as I got older they gained some depth and relatability.

Unfortunately, “Yes Day” falters on this front—I suspect, as a mature audience, you’ll alternate between looking impatiently at the clock and being impatient. The elements of a good family film are laid out from the start but never developed. Jennifer Garner stars as Allison, a once-adventurous mother. She used to take her husband skydiving and rock climbing, but now she finds herself having to be the disciplinarian of three children. Her husband, played by Edgar Ramirez, is a discipline and compliance lawyer who spends all day saying no at work, so he enjoys being a “dear daddy” when he comes home.

Garner’s character seems like a lot of fun at first – she’s bullied by her kids for being a bad cop and having to replace her husband, who is overbearing and often absent from family time due to work. She even tried re-entering the workforce, but was basically told the position was not suitable for a mother. The foundation of this troubled but all-too-common family dynamic is set up, then never built up, as the film descends into the 24 hours of chaos that is “yes day.”

This section of the film suffers from the simultaneously unimaginative and unrealistic demands of children. Eating lots of ice cream and throwing balloons filled with Kool-Aid is a wish, a slightly tame activity, but doing long-term damage to Allison’s car and even the family home is part of the deal, and I can do it. I don’t see any parents agreeing to some of these requirements, even in the “yes days” because of the financial implications. We are asked to stop our disbelief, but for little. Once, Allison was even invited by a leader to sing for her daughter at a music festival. It is an interesting scene; the emotion coming from his daughter was uncharacteristic of a 14 year old and what title would allow that?

Some lessons were learned, but they felt a little shallow and forgettable. It also has a very short running time of just 79 minutes from start to credits, so there isn’t much time to get any story going (although I suspect by the halfway point, you’ll be happy with the short run time). “Yes Day” is totally fun for a family evening at home for your 6-10 year old family, but it doesn’t cost much more than that. Most parents will find the Yes Day appeal. Even if it sounds like a banana. Twenty-four hours where kids can make the rules? It’s a “Heck yeah!” and “Heck no!” No one likes to be the party police, but when you’re parenting – for the most part – you have to be reasonable. Is that right? Waiting. Am I right? I? Well, charm.

My feeling is that many families will be watching Yes Day on March 12th, when the Torres family and their era of unlimited entertainment will be introduced to Netflix viewers. (Especially in Ontario, where the pandemic has turned the difference from March to April, this movie might seem like the mental vacation parents—and I guess, kids—need.) But while the movie occasionally made my two teenagers laugh, I couldn’t quite provide the fantasy escape I was looking for.

If you haven’t guessed the story, here it is. Allison (Jennifer Garner) and Carlos (Edgar Ramirez) keep saying no to their kids and co-workers. But the couple said yes to all kinds of fun things — before they had kids. Now Carlos is the bad guy at work and inevitably Allison becomes the bad guy at home. Constant negativity weighed heavily on him. Her three children, Katie (Jenna Ortega), Nando (Julian Lerner) and Ellie (Everly Carganilla), are adorable but constantly test her patience as they question the rules.

Review: Netflix’s Jennifer Garner Family Movie Yes Day Will Make You Say, ‘eh, Sure, Maybe’

When Torres’ parents heard about Yes Day, Allison became interested. On the one hand, he is a practical old man. On the other hand, he remembered his past lameness. Then, at the age of 14, yearning for freedom, Kathy called her parents fun killers. You see Allison’s jaw tighten. (Brings me back to Garner’s CIA agent Sidney Bristow back in the glory days of Alias .) “Oh, it went on,” you can hear him say.

Allison takes charge of the family’s Yes Day, braving every challenge the kids throw at her and Carlos. Watercolor makeup? you got it. Car wash with the windows open? Good grief. Amateur. The kids’ mysterious plan leads to a grand finale, and Allison is nearly dizzy trying to figure out what’s going on.

Garner’s casting is genius, and in fact, she’s known for being a great mom, a great person, and super mischievous. JOHN P. JOHNSON/Netflix

The tension in this wholesome scenario comes from Allison and Katie’s developing relationship. Just two years ago, Katie loved taking her mother everywhere with her, including to concerts. Now Katie wants to do something on her own. But Allison worries that Katie isn’t quite ready for the real world. So Yes Day also takes a gamble between mother and daughter. Then there’s the mini-drama between Allison and Carlos about the roles of parents, part of which has to do with gender differences.

Jennifer Garner Teaches Michelle Obama About ‘yes Day’

In some ways, Garner’s cast is genius. You don’t need to be familiar with pop culture to understand that she’s known for being a great mom, a good person, and super fit. She’s talked about Yes Day for years, even making a call on Ellen’s show in 2018 to raise money for the charity.

While Garner seems to be on her best footing in the film, the scripted assignments don’t require much from her. Ultimately, Yes Day isn’t determined to be a fun family film or a family drama. The crimes of the Torres children did not end up killing my own family. I had some fun; my kids totally understand that this is complete fiction and kind of a laugh.

The film also attempts a bit of bilingualism, with Carlos occasionally speaking Spanish and a few brief Spanish expressions from Allison and Katie. But unlike series like Jane the Virgin, it doesn’t quite cover it. I don’t understand the rhythm of Torres’ bilingualism, it feels like a banal addition to the realities of life.

In the interests of consistency among critical reviews, The Globe has scaled back its star rating system in film and theater to include music, books, visual arts, and dance. Instead, selected works will be listed as Critic’s Choice throughout their coverage. Have you experienced Yes Day? Although made famous by the recent movie starring Jennifer Garner, I first heard about doing a Yes Day from a friend when she was a baby, toddler, preschooler, elementary school mom. It sounds like a lot of fun, but it feels overwhelming thanks to a tight budget and a lot of little things.

Yes. The day doesn’t have to be an amazing big day full of expensive outings. Often, all our children want is our attention and presence.
