Ever flown to Omaha, Nebraska or Santa Barbara, California? Chances are you’ve flown on an Embraer jet. The older model is mediocre at best – at worst, you’ll find low ceilings, cramped seating, and limited storage. In other words, if you remember flying on this company’s planes, it’s probably for all the wrong reasons.

Fortunately, that’s starting to change. US regional carriers, including operating services for America, Delta and United, began flying the Embraer ERJ-175, which offers an enhanced experience than previous regional jets. And if you’re loyal to JetBlue, you’re probably familiar with the E-190, which some prefer over the Airbus A320 and A321.

Fortunately, the E-190/E-195 will be getting a major upgrade, in the form of the E195-E2. I got the chance to tour the first plane this week at the Paris Air Show.

This is Embraer’s largest aircraft to date – it’s a mix between a regional jet and a mainline aircraft, though passengers should expect the same comfort as in a Boeing 737 or Airbus A320, with 2-2 economy seats instead of 3-3 spaced on board.

This particular aircraft is currently undergoing rigorous testing, and is loaded with current test equipment – plus a few seats from the previous generation.

However, Embraer does have a cabin mock-up – it’s an upgrade over the demo E190-E2 cabin I saw at last year’s Farnborough Air Show.

It’s unlikely we’ll see these seats (or even similar versions) on any of the final jets – instead, they’re meant to represent the potential of the aircraft. Typically, Embraer’s new jets offer first-class cabins when operated for major US airlines.

Economy seats are more realistic. As I mentioned, the seats are arranged in a 2-2 configuration, which I prefer the 3-3 of a mainline narrow body jet.

You may have noticed that some seats have more legroom than others – like last year’s tease, these seats are arranged in different configurations.

With a pitch of just 28 inches, the E195-E2 can accommodate 146 passengers in a single-class configuration. Most likely we’ll be looking at 31 inches, which will drop capacity to 132, while the three-cab configuration (first, extra legroom and regular economy) will offer 120 seats.

Is this what “profit hunter” airlines expect? Possible. The E195-E2 is expected to be very economical, and with a range of nearly 3,000 miles, that will be plenty, allowing carriers to operate short hop and transcon services – perhaps to and from secondary destination markets, such as Boston to Reno.

Assuming the airline doesn’t choose too narrow a 28-inch pitch, the E195-E2 should be a comfortable ride – especially for passengers lucky enough to fly in front.

Martyn Holmes, Vice President Europe, Russia and Central Asia, Embraer Commercial Aviation said, “The E195-E2 is the largest of the three aircraft in the E-Jets E2 family, seating between 120 and 146 passengers depending on configuration. Therefore , spanning a wide range of market segments to aircraft offering fewer than 120 seats. Operators such as Air Astana love their E2s because they deliver unmatched savings and efficiency, superior operational flexibility, reliability, and unmatched passenger comfort. As the most efficient single aisle jet in the market, the E195-E2 is the ideal aircraft to build and grow in a regional hub, and will complement Hunter’s existing low-cost, mainline fleet and we are already seeing significant interest from airline operators in.

Last April, the E195-E2 received type certification simultaneously from the world’s three major regulatory authorities – ANAC, FAA, and EASA.

The E195-E2 carries more payload and burns 25.4% less fuel per seat than previous generation aircraft. Its maximum range is 2,600 nautical miles (4,815 km) fully loaded, 600 nm further than the E195, and there are three additional rows of seats. Airlines can choose to configure the cabin in two classes with 120 seats or one class with up to 146 seats.
